Sandy Springs Fire Department
As a relatively new city, Sandy Springs has focused on providing the most effective and efficient services possible. This philosophy carries over into the City’s public safety operations. Currently, the Sandy Springs Fire Department, which launched on December 29, 2006, has 135 firefighters, including 85 fulltime and 50 part-time Fire/Rescue personnel, operating out of four stations throughout the community. The Sandy Springs Fire Department has an active training program and is 100 percent compliant with NFPA Standard 1001 with an average of 11 years of service by a Sandy Springs firefighter.
SSFD responds to over 10,000 calls each year and places a strong emphasis on emergency medical services (EMS). The SSFD protects more than 40 percent of the available hospital beds in the Metro Atlanta area. Further, the department is responsible for the protection of the 5th busiest stretch of the U.S. Interstate Highway System – Interstate 285. Sandy Springs has more than 43,000 housing units (92 percent occupied and 59 percent multi-family dwellings) and 22,000,000 square feet of office space, ranging from single story office parks to more than 125 high rise buildings (more than four stories). Since inception SSFR has fought over 287 building fires.

There are several things you have to keep in mind with having part time employees in EMERGENCY SERVICES.
ReplyDelete1. Are there restrictions on when they have to report and when they can just not be available? Can they go out of town at will and not be accessible?
2. Does the involvement of part time include critical positions.
3. Does the involvement of part time affect the rates of fire insurance? This could wind up being one of those..."citizens will pay one way or the other..." situations.
4. Citizens are not being nasty just because they have nothing else to do, but are greatly concerned because quite frankly, the local officials have not shown competence in setting up the Ambulance services so we do not want them to make a decision about another MAJOR ITEM IN OUR LIVES...OUR HOMES! If they cannot get a competent EMS response system in place since 2011 -- IT IS NOW 2014 -- what makes us want to put our heads down at night and go to sleep in our homes?
What the City does not realize is that the very peace of mind for our families and homes is at stake here! They are NUTS if they think we trust them with our safety.
We have a mayor that stands at an intersection corner where the high school is located and other schools within a mile or so, looks in all directions and upon seeing nothing but houses to the end of those streets, says, "...this is not a residential area!" If his perception is so faulty, why would we want him leading the way for anything?
We have been so proud of our Police Department and now we are even seeing the bullying being reported in the evening news! Dunwoody is getting a very bad reputation.
