Fran Millar and Tom Taylor give fire to city council Representative Willard explodes wants Dunwoody to share costs of fire

Fran Millar and Tom Taylor are giving the City Council the ability to obtain money for the fire department without going to the citizens for a vote. 

Someone asked the questioned "After the 3.04 mileage rate is use to start the Department and pay the payroll does the council have to go to the citizens for a vote if another truck is needed? No real answer was given.


The City Attorney for Sandy Springs /Representative Willard exploded when that person stated 30% of Sandy Springs fire Department was part time employees. Rep.Wendell Willard argued it was all full time employees. Sandy Springs uses part time employees to save on  benefits package to cut the costs of fire department. 
The poster has found an ad (see below) on the city site advertising 
Dunwoody has a full time employee fire department. We don't think about it BUT during a crisis our fire fighters do not leave there post with us to report to their full time jobs elsewhere.  Little things like that matter to a city that has been hit by a tornado sir.

Sandy Springs Fire Department | Part-time Fire & Rescue Technician

Under the close supervision of a Crew Chief, protects lives and property through activities associated with fire prevention, rescue, firefighting, hazardous materials and emergency medical incidents and participates in the training and maintenance activities necessary to achieve that end.

Part-time schedules are limited to 5 shifts per month or 29 hours per week. This position may require work on some holidays, nights and weekends. Part-time positions with the City of Sandy Springs are not eligible for any employment benefits.

Essential Functions

• Render emergency care such as:  clearing, opening and maintaining an airway, cardio pulmonary resuscitation, controlling external hemorrhage, treating for shock, stroke, poisoning, drug overdose, burns, immobilization of fractures, bandaging, etc.
• Perform fire-fighting duties such as combating, extinguishing and preventing fires, and answering emergency calls with an engine, ladder, or squad company.  Lay and connect hoses, direct water onto burning structures, raise and climb ladders; use other firefighting techniques such as ventilating burning buildings (chopping holes in floors or roofs); administer first aid to injured persons; perform salvage operations; and inspect assigned district to assure knowledge of access, fire hazards, etc.
• Perform at the OSHA 1910.120 HazMat “Awareness Level” at the scene of emergencies as necessary. 
• Train for, and participate in the protection of life and property by fire fighting and rescue activities. 
• Participate in fire drills and attend training classes in firefighting, EMS and related subjects.
• Handle routine custodial maintenance of the fire department equipment (such as oxygen breathing equipment, resuscitation equipment, etc.), apparatus and quarters.
• Conform to the safety requirements of the department and City.
• Performs other related duties as required.

Work Conditions

• Employees are subjected to a variety of indoor and outdoor environments, to inclement weather, hazardous conditions, and strenuous physical exertion when fighting fires.
• Must be able to wear all assigned personal protective equipment and perform related emergency scene duties effectively and efficiently.  Must be able to frequently lift and carry heavy weights (45 lbs. or more), climb, walk, run, drive vehicles, crawl, stoop, push, jump, grasp and manipulate small objects, maintain balance on variable footing, and use other emergency and firefighting equipment as required. 

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Must possess a valid, Georgia driver’s license and have an acceptable driving record.

Additional Preferred Qualifications

• Georgia Basic Firefighter certification (NPQ 1)
• Current National Registry or State of Georgia EMT-I or Paramedic Certification
